The hangar that was used during the climax of the 1941 film Casablanca was all but destroyed at Van Nuys airport, Los Angeles, duringjanuary. The unannounced demolition work was halted after the owner of the airport's Airtel Hotel alerted the authorities. He now hopes to incorporate the surviving facade into the Airtel complex. Numerous attempts had been made to put some form of preservation order on the hangar, which in recent years has been used as a manufacturing plant for products unconnected with aviation.
