INCIDENCE AND INHERITANCE OF UTERO-VAGINAL DISORDERS IN A HERD OF MURRAH BUFFALOES

Based on 2306 calving records of 781 Murrah buffaloes sired by 135 sires from 1985 to 2000 indicated the incidence of utero-vaginal prolapse, retention of placenta and metritis as 3.8, 8.6 and 9.6 percent, respectively. Prolapse was significantly affected by season of calving whereas retention of placenta varied significantly over the period of calving and metritis was affected significantly by parity and season of calving. The heritability estimates of prolapse, retention of placenta and metritis were found to be 0.25, 0.15 and 0.23, respectively. Whereas the corresponding values for repeatability were 0.28, 0.20 and 0.26, respectively.
