PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL (PRA) : A CASE STUDY

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is a methodology for interacting with villagers, realizing them and learning from them. In PRA, intended groups can participate in decision- making, execution and monitoring. It provides an alternative framework fordata collection and analysis. This is a powerful methodology for rural development, which focus attention on people, their livelihood and their interrelationship with socio-economic and ecological factors. The recent case study (2003) was done by the Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, Kolkata- 37 in Ayeshpur village of Nadia District. Various PRA tools such as village transect, Space analysis. Time analysis, Decision analysis and flow analysis were applied to analyze the spatial pattern of village and accordingly different socio-economic and socio cultural problems related to agriculture, animal husbandry and others of the study area were identified.
