Fishing practice of santal tribe

Fishing practices of 56 Santals were assessed in 4 selected villages of Binpur Block, Midnapore district of West Bengal. The mojority of Santal (64.2996) engaged in fishing in Terapheni river for 6.76 hrs. The type of catch dependent upon availability of fish in river, canals and ponds. The average catch per day was 2.00 kg. The results indicated that they took group discusion before going for fishing in places away from home and when they went to catch fish in owner's pond. Majority of Santals (76.78%) sold their fish directly to consumers and the average selling price was Rs. 41.39 per kg.
