When patient safety initiatives are discussed, the focus is often on what the organisation or professional are doing to reduce errors. Patient safety initiatives to date have been systems oriented and there has rarely been a focus on the patient. However, patients can provide useful feedback on issues such as care quality, planning and monitoring of treatment regimens. The new ethos of the NHS post-Francis is to put the patient first and at the heart of the NHS, giving impetus to the need to actively involve patients in safety and care quality strategies, making them aware of what is going on and involving them in the process.
