A comparative study of cytogenetics of chicken (Gallus domesticus) and quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): Prospect of hybridization

Bone marrow cells were collected from 16 Japanese quails and 8 White Leghorn fowls at 2 weeks of age and used for karyotype analysis. The diploid chromosome number in both the species was 2n = 78 with 8 pairs of macrochromosomes in fowls and 6 pairsin quails. With the exception of the 4th pair and 'w' chromosome, the corresponding macro-chromosomes in the 2 species were morphologically similar. Other morphometric data and probable factors limiting hybridization between fowls and quail were brieflydiscussed.
