摘要

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is the most dreaded bacterial disease encountered in India accounting for the heavy morbidity and mortality in buffaloes and cattle. The disease is caused by Pasteurella multocida, a bacterium that is known with a wide range of economically important diseases in domesticated animals throughout the world. The Asian setrotype B : 2 and African serotype E : 2 of P. multocida (Carter and Heddleston system) corresponding to 6 : B and 6:E (Namioka and Carter system) are mainlyresponsible for HS in animals. The present study was envisaged to characterise biochemical diversity of the pathogen responsible for HS in animals. Thirty six isolates of P. multocida serotype B : 2 belonging to buffalo, cattle, pig, sheep and goat wereobtained from Division of bacteriology and Mycology, IVRI, Izatnagar. All the P. multocida isolates were serotyped using the conventional methods at Veterinary Research Institute, Perideniya, Sri Lanka and National Animal Disease Centre (NADC), Ames, Iowa, USA.
