Studies on isolation and characterization of virus from an outbreak of cowpox in India.

A bovine orthopoxvirus was isolated from scab lesions on cattle from a mixed herd of 1000 buffaloes and cross bred cattle during an outbreak affecting 57 cattle. The isolate produced non-haemorrhagic pock lesions on cultures chick embryo chorio-allantoic membranes. The isolate showed a cytopathic effect on the first passage in calf kidney cell cultures which was complete within 72-96 h. It was concluded that the isolate was a white cowpox virus strain.
