GROSS ANATOMY AND CYTOMORPHOLOGY OF THE MODERATOR BANDS (TRABECULAE SEPTOMERGINALIS) OF PIG WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE CONDUCTING SYSTEM

Gross anatomical, histomorphological and histochemical aspects of the moderator bands (Trabeculae septomerginalis) were studied on pig. Twenty hearts were collected and ten were kept for gross anatomical study and rests were preserved in 10% neutral buffer formalin (NBF) for microscopical observation. The present finding revealed that the moderator band was present in the right ventrical, but none was detected in the left ventrical. The thickness of the band varied among individuals. Histologically,all the bands were made up of endocardium with central core of myocardium. The purkinje fibres were distributed in the subendocardium and in scattered form in the myocardium. The number of fasciculae were 40-60 in pig. The number of purkinje fibre in each fasciculae were recorded as 2-5. The diameter of the purkinje fibre were 4 times greater than the cardiac muscle fibre. The nuclear diameter of purkinje fibre was more than the same of the cardiac muscle fibre.
