The propagation of guided waves in planar optical waveguides characterized by an intensity dependent refractive index is analyzed. Closed form expressions for Dgr;bgr;k, the change in the propagation constant of the symmetric waveguide, were obtained using perturbation theory and were evaluated to predict optimum thickness for maximizing Dgr;bgr;. It is found that the maximum value of Dgr;bgr; is inversely proportional to the optimized thickness of the waveguide.
