Field experiment was conducted during 2007 to 2009 after the delineation of sulphur deficient areas of Dakshin Dinajpur district of North Bengal with the objective of enhancing the productivity of jute (in high and low jute productive areas of the district) through balanced NPK fertilization coupled with sulphur or organic matter application in the sulphur deficient soils of the highest jute productive area (Balurghat Block) as well as the lowest productive area (Kumarganj block) of the district. Theresults of the field experiment revealed that balanced NPK fertilization coupled with sulphur application increased pooled jute yield by 17.7 % in Balurghat Block while 21 % in Kumarganj Block over Farmers' practice. Organic matter application with balanced fertilization also increased jute yield. Application of sulphur along with balanced NPK application not only enhanced the productivity of jute but also improved the benefit: cost ratio vis-a-vis incidence of pests and diseases.
