Robotic assisted radical cystectomy and urinary diversion

Radical cystectomy remains the treatment of choice for patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer and superficial disease refractory to less invasive treatments. It remains one of the most challenging and morbid procedures that a urologist performs. Even in the best hands there is a risk of mortality albeit around 2%. With the increasing popularity of the standardised Clavien classification for reporting complications, it is becoming evident that over 60% of patients having open radical cystectomy (ORC) and urinary diversion suffer a complication while trying to be rid of their dangerous disease. Any attempt at trying to reduce this complication rate would thus be of major benefit to our patients.
