A pair of analytic formulas for the shear viscosity of simple fluids are derived from kinetic equations as functions of shear rate (ggr;), temperature, and density. One of the formulas is of the form eegr;=eegr;0thinsp;lnlsqb;tgr;khgr;+(1+tgr;2khgr;2)1/2rsqb;/(tgr;khgr;), where khgr;=sqrt;2ggr; and tgr; is a function of Newtonian shear viscosity eegr;0, temperature, and density. The shear viscosities calculated with the formulas compare well with the molecular dynamics shear viscosities of argon.
