Despite being the third largest oil exporter (2.5MM b/d), the country lacks refining capacity to produce high-quality fuels, and as a result, relies heavily on purchased fuels to keep up with gasoline demand that is pegged at 31.5K-b/d. Each year the country must import 1MM mt (7.3MM bbl) of gasoline to meet domestic needs; however, at times that is not enough. Already in the past 10 months, UAE has experienced three fuel shortages. In order to decrease the gap between supply and demand, Takreer, the refining arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC), is planning to double its capacity by the end of 2013.
