A quantum mechanical Hartree calculation of the absorption and emission spectra of1P1and3P1excitons in solid Ne is presented at pressures 0le;Plsim;20 kbar. Distortions of the 30 independent lattice vectors in the first 16 shells surrounding the excited atom and two parameters characterizing the system wave function are treated as variational parameters. These results are compared with experiment and with previous classical calculations. The rms fluctuations of the excited and host lattice atoms about their equilibrium sites are also presented.
