The shale revolution in the US has affected multiple states differently in large part due to local politics.An examination of three states-California,Colorado,and North Dakota-show a state largely unaffected by shaie,another state facing more regulations on drilling,and one state incentivi2ing more shale production.It would seem that the shale revolution did not reach CA.While state oil production has fallen 60(460K b/d)from 1985 peak levels,oil consumption in the state remains high.It is estimated that the state consumes 952.4-K b/d of gasoline and 190.5K b/d of diesel.It is also estimated that the state accounts for 20 of jet fuel consumption in the US.This imbalance of production and consumption has forced CA to import 70 of its oil.The collapse of oil production in Alaska,which was previously a major supplier of CA's oil,has forced the state to import increased amounts of foreign oil-as much as 60,according to recent reports.While CA does have the Monterey shale formation that could provide 20B bbl of oil,fracking bans and other state legislation as well as resistance from newly-elected Governor Gavin Newsom has made it difficult for drilling companies to access this resource.It remains unclear whether or not the state will realize the economic benefits of shale in the near future.
