Total cross sections have been measured for Cs+ions scattered by He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in the rangeETHgr;R=5ndash;1000 eV deg. Here,Eis the laboratory energy of the Cs+beam and THgr;Ris the resolution angle of the apparatus. The cross sections have been inverted to obtain accurate estimates of the potentialV(R) over a wide range ofRincluding the attractive well region. The results are compared with other theoretical and experimental work on these systems. The agreement with other experiments is good, except for the Cs+ndash; He system, which is the most difficult diatomic to study because of its shallow potential well.
