This study was designed to evaluate in vitro cytotoxicity of methanol extract of Muntingia calabura Linn. (Elaeocarpaceae) fruits against human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa), human Jaryngeal epithelial carcinoma cells (Hep-2) and mouse embryonic fibroblasts (NIH 3T3). The cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay. The methanol extract displayed remarkable cytotoxic activity against the cell lines with IC_(50) Values of 1.0 and 0.8 and mu g/ml against HeLa, Hep-2 and NIH 3T3 cell lines respectively. The results obtained from the study suggest that the methanol extract tested may be a useful chemotherapeutic agent to inhibit the growth of carcinoma cells and this study would bring light to carry out further experiments and to prevent the cancerin humans.
