Fermentable Sugar Production by Fungal Crude Enzyme Hydrolysis of Acid-Pretreated Corn Cob Blank

Com cob sugar solution (CS) was produced by the enzymatic hydrolysis of acid pretreated ground com cobs. The process involved heating up the 1.5% (v/v) sulfuric acid solution containing 50% (w/v) of ground com cob to 95°C for 1 hr. Then, the pretreated mixture was cooled down and adjusted pH to pH4.0 prior to adding with AKlOase. From the 40-ml total volume of the enzymatic reaction mixture, the amount of reducing sugar obtained was 21.8 mg/ml. The com cob sugar solution was concentrated by evaporation to obtain the solution, of 100 mg/ml (w/v) of CS. This CS was tested and found to be effective in supporting growth of different kinds of bacteria in minimal medium as well as that in supporting alcohol production from yeast.
