Diabetes Mellitus and its Treatment with the Help ofAloe Vera

According to a recent survey done by W.H.O. around 160 million people are suffering from this fatal disorder and this figure will double by the year 2030. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires long-term medical attention both to limit the development of its devastating complications and to manage them when they do occur. Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world because of its role in the development of cardiovascular, renal, neuropathic, and retinal disease. These complications, particularly cardiovascular disease (approximately 50-75% of medical expenditures), are the major sources of expenses for patients with diabetes mellitus. Also, Synthetic antidiabetic drugs cannot fully control glucose level as well as cause side effects prompting the patients stop taking the medication. Thus, people are now focusing on herbal drugs which are lesser toxic and cheaper as well. Aloe vera, a well known ancient herbal plant is claimed to have antidiabetic property with fewer side effects and less expensive without toxicity. The present review aimed to highlight the recent researches done all over the world to study the efficacy of Aloe vera as an antidiabetic agent.
