Resonant optical absorption by discontinuous transparent overlayers on gold surfaces

Discontinuous MgF2film deposited on Au surfaces shows enhanced optical absorption. This absorption may result from the coupling of light with the dielectric particles, making possible the excitation of surface plasmons. A simple ellipsoidal particle mode is used to account for the observed absorption.
