The obituary of John Frederick Griffiths, 1926-2003

John Frederick Griffiths, Professor Emeritus of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University, died in College Station of heart disease on 27 July 2003. He was born in London, England and emigrated to the United States in 1962 to join the faculty of the (then) Meteorology Department at A&M. He rose to the rank of Professor of both Meteorology and Geography, and from 1973 to his retirement in 1999 was also Texas State Climatologist. Griffiths was a teenage survivor of the London blitz during World War II, and later earned degrees from London University (Imperial and Kings Colleges) in Mathematics, Physics, Meteorology and Theology. He served in the British Colonial Scientific Service with the Desert Locust Survey in Ethopia, Somalia and Saudi Arabia (1950-1956). He then served as Bioclimatologist with the East African Veterinary Research Organization (1956-1958), after which he was Principal Scientific Officer in charge of the research section of the East African Meteorological Department based in Nairobi, Kenya until 1962.
