Aluminium drawn and ironed can CDII can)consumption in Japan has increased year by year, 16,360 millioncans were used in the year 1998. In connection with theincreasing consumption, light-weighting is an important issue forsaving energy and resources-This paper reviews the trend of light-weighting in aluminiumDI cans through the Japanese and USA markets from 1987 to 1998.The weight of aluminium Dl cans has decreased since 1987,but, such a trend almost stopped around 1996 both in Japan andin USA. The thicknesses of the body, end, and tab stocks have de-creased with light-weighting. The strength of the can body stockhas not decreased with the decreasing thickness. As for the end,the buckle pressure has not changed in spite of decreasing the endstock thickness. The end diameter has been reduced allowing forthe reduced thickness. Also higher end stocks strengths have beenachieved by chemical composition changes and/or higher cold rolling reductions. The lightest can in the USA is 15.7g, which is lighter by l.5g thanthe Japanese can.
