On the variation principle in electronhyphen;atom scattering

The variation principle in electronhyphen;atom scattering is analyzed in an attempt to explain the difficulties encountered in even the simplestehyphen;Hexpansion type calculations. Different variational methods are compared and an approach is introduced which will eliminate the occurrence of spurious singularities found in other methods. This method is applicable to both elastic and inelastic collisions.
