A modified Langevin equation is used to investigate the possibility of a nondissipative transfer of energy from a classical oscillator driven at high frequencies to a classical fluid. It is found that such an absorption of energy is quite possible even at driving frequencies which are presently attainable. The vibrationalhyphen;frequency shift is found to be simply related to the meanhyphen;square force exerted by the fluid on the oscillatory degrees of freedom.
