Wheneveryou are planning to make a Mini go faster, the brakes and the suspension should be fully assessed and, where necessary, upgraded before you go for the faster engine. If your Mini is pre-1984 and not a Cooper or 1275 GT model, then initial upgrading of the drums to a disc system becomes even more important. This is because drum brakes are not up to coping with anything more than relatively minor tuning to the small-bore engines. Certainly when upgrading to a 1275cc or larger, disc brakes are a must, not just because of the added performance, but also because of the additional weight of the 1275cc (large-bore) engine.
