Electron paramagnetic resonance studies of Gd3plus;in single crystals ofLnlpar;C2H5SO4rpar;3middot; 9H2O(where Ln3plus;denotes La3plus;, Pr3plus;, Nd3plus;, Sm3plus;, Tb3plus;, Dy3plus;, Ho3plus;, Er3plus;, Yb3plus;, and Lu3plus;) have been carried out at X band at room temperature and at 77deg;K. The spin Hamiltonian parametersb20,thinsp;b40,andb60andgVerbar;have been evaluated at both temperatures for each host except terbium ethyl sulfate at 77deg;K. The absorption linewidths for each transition have been measured at both temperatures. The present results are compared with previous results. A principal conclusion is that the magnitude ofb20for Gd3plus;in the various rarehyphen;earth ethyl sulfates is more nearly a linear function of the ionic radius of the trivalent host ion than of its atomic number.
