The navigator was responsible for finding the target and directing the Lancaster safely back to base. Bombers usually followed a dog-leg course to the target, and on the return, to misdirect enemy defences. When the Lancaster entered service in 1942, RAF Bomber Command was essentially still using refined versions of pre-war Observer's navigation systems, equipment and training, which had proven utterly inadequate for finding and bombing targets at night.
