The Railton plant originally dates back to the 1920s and has expanded to its current capacity through a number of upgrades. The existing kiln was built in 1965 with a capacity of 800tpd and comprised a single-string preheater and ESP. In 1980, a second preheater string and ESP was constructed, increasing the plant capacity to 2200tpd. Another major expansion took place in 1990 further increasing capacity to 3000tpd. By this stage, ESP1 was handling 228,230Atn~3/hr, whilst ESP2 was handling around 186,720Am~3/hr. Since the last upgrade, plant optimisation has steadily increased clinker production to 3500tpd.
