Reversible excitedhyphen;state electronhyphen;transfer reactions represent a theoretically and experimentally important class of photochemical reactions. The theory of a new method for studying these sytems is presented. The technique permits simultaneous measurement of the thermal back electronhyphen;transfer rate constant (kth) and the probability of detectable excitedhyphen;state electron transfer per quenching encounter (fgr;et). The method is rapid, inexpensive, and simple to implement; it can work well even whenkthis at the diffusion controlled limit. A suitable experimental arrangement is described along with the effects of experimental errors.
