Mining has been essential to the growth and development of the United States since the nineteenth century. Mining of a variety of natural resources played a key role in the industrialization, urbanization, and non-Indian settlement of the American West in the nineteenth century. Mining was also instrumental in launching the United States into a permanent position as a world power in the twentieth century.
