Bob Montgomery: Father of Beatty

Although Jim Butler, Harry Stimler, Ed Cross and Frank "Shorty"" Harris cut a wider swath in the history of Nevada's twentieth century mining boom, Earnest A. "Bob" Montgomery, founder of Rhyolite's Montgomery-Shoshone Mining Company and the father of the community of Beatty, deserves better than history has accorded him. Born in Toronto, Canada on November 24, 1867, he grew up in Stuart, Iowa. Following his father's death in 1875, he and his brothers, George and Frank, took over the family farm. Farming was not to their taste, however, and they moved on to Idaho in 1884 where they tried their hand at prospecting and worked in the mines in Wood River.
