Excitation of HD molecules into specific vibrational and rotational levels of theBthinsp;1Sgr;uplus;electronic state by absorption of the 1048 and 1066 Aring; argon resonance lines has been studied under various experimental conditions by observing the steadyhyphen;state fluorescence spectra of thelpar;Bthinsp;1Sgr;uplus;rarr; Xthinsp;1Sgr;gplus;rpar;Lyman bands. Strong excitation of thelpar;vprime; equals; 3, Jprime;equals; 2rpar;, lpar;vprime; equals; 5 , Jprime;equals;2rpar;, andlpar;vprime; equals; 6 , Jprime; equals; 5rpar;levels was achieved. The HDlpar;Bthinsp;1Sgr;uplus;rarr; Xthinsp;1Sgr;gplus;rpar;electronic fluorescence fromvprime;equals;3was found to be quenched by HD,3He,4He, and Ne with effective collision cross sections of 79, 8.8, 9.9, and 3.5 Aring;2at 297deg;K. Vibrational energy transfer processesHDlpar;Bthinsp;1Sgr;uplus;; vprime;equals;3, Jprime;rpar; plus;Mrarr;HDlpar;Bthinsp;1Sgr;uplus;; vprime;equals;2, Jprime; plus; Dgr; Jprime; rpar; plus;Mplus; Dgr;Ewere studied for the collision partners3He,4He, and Ne. Large effective cross sections of 0.89, 0.76, and 0.81 Aring;2were found at 303deg;K. Rotationallyhyphen;resolved spectra for Ne show that vibrational energy is transferred into both rotation and translation. All energetically accessible values of Dgr;Jprime; were observed. On the average onehyphen;half of the vibrational energy was transferred into rotation.
