ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF APIUM GRAVEOLENS AND CYMBOPOGAN FLEXUOSUS LEAF EXTRACT ON STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

The present study was designed to investigate the anti-diabetic effects of 50%ethanolie extract of Apium graveolens and Cymbopoganjlexuosus leaf on normal and streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced into male albino wistar rats by intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin at adose of 50 nig/kg body weight. The plant extracts were administered orally at three different doses to diabetic rats for 28 days. The diabetic rats showed an increase in the levels of blood glucose and decrease in the levels of bodyweight, liver glycogen. Treatment with 50% ethanolic extract of Apium graveolens and Cymbopoganflexuosus leaf significantly reduced the levels of blood glucose and increased the levels of liver glycogen. Thus, these plants possess an anti-hyperglycemic activity.
