On the basis of an observation of his own, the author discusses various ideas on the origin of erotomania and some practical conclusions for managing the erotomaniac and sub-érotomaniac patients often met within a non-psychiatric practice. The awakening of erotomania depends on the psychological make-up of the patient. Factors favouring this relationship depend on the medical circumstances themselves; a retiring attitude on the part of the doctor, a mysterious aloofness, increase the danger of the relationship slipping towards érotomania.
