Antibiosis, one of three types of resistance mechanisms proposed by Painter (1951), is described as those adverse effects on the insect life history when a resistant host-plant variety is used as food. The adverse effect on the insect can be in the form of reduced fecundity, decreased size, abnormal length of life and/or increased mortality (Owens 1975). We investigated the antibiotic effects of flowers of some wild relatives of pigeonpea Cajanus scarabaeoides, C. cajanifolius, C. reticulatus, C. sericus, F_1 (C. scarabaeoides x C. cajan), and cultivated pigeonpea (T 15-15) on the biology of the pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera. The experiment was conducted during Dec 1993-Feb 1994 at Entomology Research Laboratory, Pulses Research Station, Gujarat Agricultural University, Sardar Krushinagar, India.
