Path Coefficient Analysis for Yield and Its Components in Chickpea

To select for higher yield, the complex interrelationships between yield-contributing characters and seed yield need to be understood. Recent findings on direct and indirect effects through path analysis of chickpea have been contradictory. Akdag andSehirali (1992) reported seed yield plant~(-1) and biological yield as the major yield-determining components, Acikgoz and Acikgoz (1994) reported seeds plant~(-1), whereas Sharrna and Maloo (1988) found that pod number had the most direct effect, followed by primary branches. Singh et al. (1990) reported that biological yield and harvest index were the major contributors to seed yield. In this study, the relationships between seed yield and nine yield-contributing characters were studied through correlation and path analysis in 38 chickpea genotypes.
