ABSTRACTSCosts have been determined, by means of a mathematical model, for batchwise dewatering of dilute carbohydrate solutions using reverse osmosis. The concept of plant design was based on multiple parallel units comprising a number of tubular modules connected in series. Major operating parameters examined were the initial feed concentration, final concentration, operating pressure and the number of modules in series. Costs, in terms of per m3of water removal, are presented for a basic feed capacity of 140m3per day.
