The line width and second moment of the Cl35pure quadrupole line have been measured as functions of xhyphen;irradiation time and inhomogeneous compression in sodium chlorate, potassium chlorate, andphyphen;dichlorobenzene. The effect of the addition ofphyphen;dibromobenzene tophyphen;dichlorobenzene has also been studied. In all cases an increase in the line width and second moment was observed, and in a few cases, a decrease in the integrated intensity was found. Several broadening mechanisms have been considered in detail, and it has been concluded that strain broadening is probably the predominant mechanism in all cases.
