In the coal and iron ore industries extensive use is made of unit trains for transport from mines to export shipping terminals and also from import terminals to customer depots, At the mines the ore or coal is processed and stockpiled ahead of the train loading station. In many mines the material handling system between processing and train loading consists of stackers, stockpiles, bucket wheel reclaimers and a wagon weighing system at the loading station, Blending systems are used at the mine site to produce a uniform product from the mine as required by the number of operating faces. At the receiving export terminal blending is required to produce the required customers specifications as received from different mine sites. Bucket wheel reclaimer selection is determined by the required train loading time and a wagon weighing system optimises the maximum payload of a given train without exceeding the permissible axle loads, This article reviews the blending options, the reclaimer selection and the wagon weighing system, which form the major components of a unit train loading system.
