Modulation Broadening of Unsaturated Lorentzian Lines

Closed, analytic expressions are obtained for the harmonic amplitudes which arise in the modulation of unsaturated Lorentzian absorption lines. Exact formulas relating characteristics of the observed signals (amplitude, width, slope ratios, etc.) to the true halfhyphen;width for arbitrary modulation amplitude are derived. The results of greatest experimental interest are graphed.
