The electronhyphen;impact ionizationhyphen;efficiency curves (I.E.) of Group VI metal carbonyls and of their fragments show that competition can occur between different ionization and fragmentation processes. By analyzing these curves, the whole decomposition scheme of W(CO)6has been obtained, although the processes involved happen too quickly to give metastable ions. A possibility of calculating the fragmentation probabilitiespias a function of electron energy is shown; for W(CO)6, this gives the information that all thepihave a similar trend in agreement with the proposed decomposition scheme involving only successive CO losses.
