A theory of thermal diffusion in liquids is presented which involves: (1) a molecular interpretation due to Denbigh of the results of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes in terms of regular solution theory; (2) a correction for differences in shape and size of the molecules.Thermal diffusion measurements have been made to 10 000 atmospheres pressure on a series of binary mixtures in a single stage system. The results indicate that the theory is satisfactory.
