One of the most visible recent changes in hatchery operations around the world has been the initiation of in ovo (in the egg) vaccination. The concept of in ovo vaccination was shown to be feasible in the early 1980s by Dr J. Sharma and others when they reported that administration of Marek's disease (MD) vaccine HVT to late stage chicken embryos was safe and more effective than post-hatch administration. Embrex Inc was formed based on Dr Sharma's concept. Work by engineers, biologists and others paid off in late 1992 with the commercialisation of an automated egg injection machine -- the Inovoject system. The Inovoject system is designed to deliver vaccines and other biologically active compounds to the late stage developing chicken embryo.
