The Czech Republic became the birthplace of modern genetics when Gregor Mendel made his famous observation in the 1860s on peas that led to the Mendelian theory which is the backbone of modern genetics. It is, therefore, appropriate that this countryshould also be the home of one of the world's poultry breeders. That company is Dominant Ltd and International Hatchery Practice recently visited them in Eastern Bohemia and uncovered an intriguing story. This story is interwoven with the 20th century politics of Eastern Europe and has provided the world with some interesting options in poultry breeding and production.
