Tiamulin and ionophores — an update

In the late seventies myco-plasma diseases of poultry and coccidiosis control were two major problems facing the poultry industry. At that time two uniquely active antibiotics from new antibiotic families were introduced to combat these problems — tiamulin for myco-plasma and monensin (Elan-coban, Elanco) for coccidiosis.Unfortunately, although both products were supremely effective they could not be used together due to a severe interaction between the two products which resulted in fatal consequences with signs similar to an ionophore overdose.
