The gonadotrophins are hormones that stimulate the gonads (the testes and ovary).They are produced in the pituitary and transferred to their site of action (the gonads) by the bloodstream. The pituitary gland or, as it is sometimes called, the hypophysis, is very closely connected to the hypothalamus on the underside of the brain. The pituitary has two distinct halves — the ade-nohypophysis and the neurohypophysis (see Fig. 1).
