Salmonella in the hatchery

In any poultry operation the hatchery is the central hub through which all product has to move — it takes eggs from all the laying farms and distributes chicks to all the growing farms throughout the organisation. Thus, the consequences of anything going wrong in the hatchery can very rapidly spread throughout the whole operation. It is bad enough having one salmonella positive breeding flock — the whole problem is compounded many times if sloppy hatchery management then allows that salmonella to backtrack and affect all the other breeding farms that supply it with eggs.
