ESR spectra of Ithinsp;17O2embedded in solid KC104exhibit a complicated17O hyperfine structure, which allows an accurate determination of the hyperfine and quadrupole tensorsA(17O) andQ(17O).A(17O) is strongly anisotropic in the molecular plane and contains an asymmetric component. These unexpected features are accounted for in terms of secondhyphen;order contributions toA(17O) arising from cross terms of the spinndash;orbit coupling and the orbital and spin dipole hyperfine interaction. The secondhyphen;order terms also contribute substantially to the hyperfine tensor of the iodine nucleus.
