摘要

Further to the disabling effects of mental health problems, there is a significant increase in mortality among young people (Patel et al, 2007). It is important to stress that the effectiveness of some of the therapeutic interventions have a good evidence base; the Government maintains that 10% of UK children aged 5—16 years may have an identifiable mental health problem, and in adults with long-term mental health problems, 50% would have experienced their first symptoms before the age of 14 years. Importantly, self-harming behaviours and substance abuse are known to be much more common in children and young people with mental health disorders; worryingly, it is estimated that 10% of all children aged 15—16 years have self-harmed.
